William Shelby Conn Jr.

MONTICELLO - Conn, William Shelby Jr., 78, of Monticello, KY, departed this life on December 29, 2013, after a long illness. Born in Wayne County to Shelby Conn, Sr. and Reba (Turner) Conn. After a year at Western Kentucky University, he enlisted in the United States Navy for 4 years as a Navy Medical Corpsman. He then graduated from Western KY University with a Business degree and subsequently earned a Master's Degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Michigan.

He was employed with Muhlenberg County Hospital with follow on as Hospital Administrator at Fleming County Hospital and Eastern State Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky. He served as Assistant Director of Kentucky Department of Mental Health and subsequently joined the staff as the Associate Executive Director of the Kentucky Hospital Association and later as the President of Kentucky Hospital Association where he served until his retirement in 1995. During his tenure as President of Kentucky Hospital Association, his accomplishments included the establishment and purchase of the first KHA office, developing programs to hospitals in areas of malpractice, workers compensation, and employee insurance. He was honored with KHA's highest award, the distinguished service award.

Survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Janet Guffey Conn; son, Richard Conn; daughter, Deborah (Roy) Bryan; eight grandchildren, Daniel Conn, Brian Conn, Quintin Bryan, Zachary Bryan, Bianca Bryan, Amber Kowalczyk, Sean Yarbrough, Taylor Kincaid; and three great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Hannah, and Carter. Also sister, Belle (Charlie) West; and many other family members and friends Preceded in death by daughter, Lisa Kincaid; brother, James Conn; and parents.

Services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Hicks -Vaughn Funeral Home at 647 North Main Street, Monticello, KY 42633, with burial in Elk Springs Cemetery.
