Gissoni, Fred L.,

84 of Crescent Hill, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2014.

A memorial service is being planned for the near future.

In lieu of flowers contributions are requested to American Printing House for the Blind, U C H M for food, or Crescent Hill United Methodist Church.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

While I never met Fred, I watched a few of his videos and spoke with many individuals who had had the pleasure of meeting and working with him. I only wish I had the opportunity to shake his hand and thank him for all of the contributions he has made to the lives of persons who are blind.

On behalf of the Michigan State University community I extend warmest regards for Fred's lifetime contributions. A true partner in advancing the lives of blind people through access to information and excellence in teaching. Fred was a kind and knowledgeable voice to all who needed insight or desired to do more. Fred is remembered for a lasting and powerful contribution to the field of blindness. Fred's spark of curiosity, a kind word or knowing perspective made him truly remarkable and memorable.

I extend my prayers and condolences to the Gissoni family. Mr. Fred Gissoni was truly a legend, in every sense of the word. I have always been interested in performing mathematical calculations on the Cranmer abacus, and found the instructions he wrote in his book easy to follow. This book encouraged me to pursue studying the abacus, and I ended up completing both courses on the device from the Hadley School. I have also learned a lot from reading articles on Fred's Head, especially in the area of independent living skills. He inspires me to carry a slate and stylus wherever I go, despite the over-reliance on electronics. Rest in peace, Mr. Gissoni.

I got the chance to live in Fred's Head for several years as the manager of the Fred's Head database, that was converted to the current Fred's Head blog. We took the many tips he had and put them on the web for everyone to learn from. We even put them on Twitter. When Fred retired from APH, I moved from Fred's head, to Fred's chair in the custtomer service area. I owe a lot to Fred, from the products and technology he helped to create to the last two employment opportunities I've enjoyed at APH. I will forever be greatful to him. Thanks Fred.

Fred meant so much to me as a friend and co-worker. His outstanding memory, wacky sense of humor, and true intellect enriched the Customer Relations Department at APH as well as those who called him. His compassion for people was truly inspiring. You will be greatly missed Fred !!

I first met Fred when I did my internship at the Ky. Department for the Blind in 1987. He took me to Frankfort and introduced me to everyone in Central office. We worked together at the agency until he retired and went to work at the Printing House. I will always remember his kindness, sense of humor, intelligence and patience. He will be missed.

Fred Gissoni will always be remembered. I have many memories as a child calling him for tech support on all kinds of Aph products, including many times on the Braille 'N Speak. He was always so patient and helpful. I got to shake his hand and meet him on his last day at Aph in 2011. I will never forget you Fred and all the great help you gave me and everyone over the years. RIP Fred. You will truly be missed!

I first met Fred when we both worked in Customer Relations, and I was amazed at his incredible memory. We could pass along a message and he could identify the caller instantly -- remembering what they bought, when he met them, family members, etc. He had a large number of fans who called regularly for advice or just to keep in touch. Others have mentioned his humor, the depth of his knowledge, his kindness, etc. He made a huge impact on the world and he will be missed.

It's hard to synthesize into a few words because Fred was great at everything. His kindness, helpfulness, and generosity were enjoyed by thousands of people who called APH for consumer help. His sense of humor and intelligence will be missed by all his friends, and I am lucky to count myself one of those.
