Jan Carew Obituary

CAREW, JAN R., of Agricola village, Guyana, passed away on December 6, 2012 leaving wife, Joy Gleason Carew, daughters, Lisa St. Aubin de Teran, Shantoba Eliza Carew; and son, David Christopher Carew; grandchildren Iseult Teran, Alexander Macbeth, and Benicio Carew; and great-grandson, Felix Radford. He also leaves his sister, Sheila Thorpe; nephews, E. Nigel Harris, Michael Harris; and nieces, Alexis Selman and Denise Harris.

He chose cremation and his remains will be interred with his wife's family in Winston-Salem, NC.

Jan Carew was born on September 24 1920, the middle child and only son of Ethel Robertson and Alan Carew. His older sister, Cicely Von Eden, precedes him in death.

Born at a time when empire was at its height and growing up when the pus of racism was seeping out from the sores of capital, Jan heralded and helped to shape the cultural revolution against colonialism and racism in poetry, painting, polemic and play. A wandering minstrel uprooted and cast abroad by the imperial imperative, he rooted himself wherever he was in the struggles of the people around him. And he was in many places, wearing many faces, but always in the same cause: freedom for the oppressed and downtrodden-writing, teaching, broadcasting, engaging with mighty men and women. A renaissance man in the most deathly of times. A black renaissance man in the whitest of times. A griot tracing us back to the ghosts in our blood. And, a presence, a persona - tall, elegant, majestic - to go with it all. "In the course of one revolving moon/ he was soldier, servant, statesman, and Maroon (Pace, Dryden)."

It is sad to see that you left us. With your books and teachings left behind, you planted a seed of inspiration that may grow in the ones you thouched and all mankind.

Dear Joy,
I was just informed, by my son, of Jan's passing upon my return from West Africa last week. Jan was a friend and a mentor who I will dearly miss but he will always remain for ever in my memory and my heart. It has been a honor to have known him and I will always cherish the weekly lunch I had with him trying to record his autobiography when I was living in Louisville. Jan schooled me about the specificity of the history of colonialism and racism in the New World, and his commitment to Africa exemplified by his selfless service to the government and people of Ghana under Dr.Kwame Nkrumah. He also taught me how to make the best out of a bad situation. May his soul rest in perfect peace with his African ancestors. Aluta continua.

What a beautiful tribute.
And what wonderful friends and family to have inspired such words/accolades--wish that I'd met him, if only for a minute.
Love to you all,

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Joy, Shantoba and all the relatives of Baba Jan Carew.

Baba Jan's life is a testimony of his commitment to using his talents to fight political oppression and to promote social justice around the world. His love for people is perhaps the most important attribute that he has left for us to commit to our memory.

One who has lived never truly dies, but crosses a bridge into an eternal life as an ancestor. May it ease our sadness a bit to know that the memories of Baba Jan will be yet another bridge between our world and the world of our ancestors.

My family and I pray that the Holy Spirit will insure a peaceful and enlightening transition of Baba Jan's spirit during his Homegoing.
