ELLIS, JAMES ALBERT "JIMMY," 74, passed away May 6, 2014.

He was the World Boxing Association heavyweight champion from 1968 to 1970. Prior to his WBA championship, he worked as a sparring partner for his very close friend, Muhammad Ali.

Jimmy became a trainer for amateur and professional boxers around the world. In later years he worked for Louisville Metro Parks system. He was a longtime member of Riverview Baptist Church.

Survivors are his children, Jamesetta Wells, Inez, Mary, Sonya, James Jr. and Jeffrey Ellis (Rosa); siblings, William (Peggy), David (Gayle), Charles and Jerry Ellis (Jennifer) and Evelyn Williams (Grover); 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Sunday from 5-9 p.m. at Canaan Christian Church, 2840 Hikes Lane. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Monday also at the church. Burial: Green Meadows Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to G. C. Williams Funeral Home.
