Benjamin Wesley Kilgore III Obituary
KILGORE, BENJAMIN WESLEY III, 81, of Raleigh, NC, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at Rex Hospital.

Ben was born in Louisville, on October 19, 1931. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben W. Kilgore Jr. While in college, Ben spent his summers in Raleigh working at Pine State Creamery. After graduation from the University of Kentucky in 1954, he moved to Raleigh to work for Pine State where he was named president in 1970. Ben's many business activities included serving as President of the North Carolina Dairy Products Association in 1978 where he received the Distinguished Service Award in 1984. He was the Secretary of the International Ice Cream Association from 1989 to 1991. He also served as the president of the Master Dairies Association in the 1980's.

Ben joined the Board of Directors of the Boys Club of Wake County in 1968 and served as president of the Board in 1972 and 1973. Under Ben's guidance, the organization began a day camping program at Camp Charles M. Griffin - a 17 acre day camp donated to the club years earlier. Ben served as Campaign Chairman during a successful 1977 capital campaign to build the new Boys Club and remained a member of the Board of Directors until 1982, when he was named to the Club's Advisory Council. Ben was inducted to the Hall of Fame for the Boys and Girls Club of Wake County in 2004.

Ben was awarded the Jaycees' Distinguished Service Award in 1962. He was president of the Kiwanis Club of Raleigh in 1967 and also named the Kiwanian of the Year in 1968. Ben was the Past President of the Rex Hospital Foundation and Past Campaign Chairman for the United Fund of Wake County. He was the original chairman of the Raleigh Transit Authority in 1975 and served on the Raleigh Transit Board from 1975 to 1982.

Ben was a member of the White Memorial Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served as a Deacon and Elder for the church. He was an active member of the Wolfpack Club for the past 44 years.

Ben is survived by his wife, Jean of 59 years; their three children, Ben W. Kilgore IV and wife, Rachel, John Moore Kilgore and wife, Deanna and James D. Kilgore II; grandchildren, Ben Kilgore V, Rebecca Kilgore, George Kilgore, John L. Kilgore and Katherine Kilgore. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Kilgore Gibbs and husband, George; niece, Gwinn Marie Moss; and nephew, Jack A. Moss and wife, Susan.

A memorial service was held February 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. A private burial was held at the Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
