Dave is survived by his wife, Rhonda Bonds Martin, his brother, Robert Martin (Kate), sister, Julie Martin (Jeff), brother in laws, Rick Bonds (Kim), and Darren Bonds (Heather), children, Amy Martin, Aaron Martin, Brandon Bedore, Adam Martin, and Jacob Martin. Dave had one grandchild, Annabelle. Dave, our gentle giant, was born in Washington D.C. to Galen Afton and Mary Lou Martin. He was a graduate of Jeffersontown High School and attended Bellarmine University, where he played basketball. He graduated from the University of KY. He continued his love of basketball and played in a 50+ league and competed in the Senior Olympics.
David found great enjoyment outdoors, working in the garden and being at the ocean with his family.
He left behind many loving nieces and nephews with fond memories of an uncle who spent countless hours wrestling, joking and giving piggy back rides, and who was always willing to play.
Dave's professional life of putting other people first began in restaurant management and more recently transportation. The kindness he showed to strangers extended to his customers, who he felt were "always right" and who were never strangers to him. As a manager, he got results from his employees by using his great sense of humor.
Dave showed genuine interest in the lives of the people who rode with him. He did whatever necessary to accommodate the unique circumstances in the lives of his clients with special needs. He took alternate forms of payment (or none at all)when someone couldn't afford to pay and his compassion extended to cutting the grass or tilling a garden for elderly customers. David had a unique ability to see into the lives of those who were lonely or struggling and find a way to do what he could to shine a light of love and hope. Christmas often found him delivering meals and spending time with those who would otherwise spend the holiday alone.
David was a beloved member of First Christian Church in Louisville where he served as a Deacon. Visitation will be 2:00-4:30 p.m. Sunday until the service time at 4:30 p.m. at his home church. Ratterman and Sons, 10600 Taylorsville Road - Jeffersontown, has been entrusted with arrangements. Dave loved his bride, Rhonda and he counted his children as his biggest blessing.
Memorial donations can be sent to Climbing Jacob's Ladder, the charity fund established for his son with autism. Donations may be made through First Christian Church of Louisville, 7700 U.S. Highway 42, Louisville, KY, 40241.
