GREENWELL, DAVID E., 89, affectionately known as Pop or Papa, of Louisville went home unexpectedly to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

Papa was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Barnabas Parrish where he volunteered endless hours in many different capacities throughout the years. Before he married in 1952 he was a monk at Gethsemane for 15 months. Pop was a proud U.S. World War II Navy Veteran. He retired from Blue Cross-Blue Shield for which he served as Fleet Mgr. and was Assistant Secretary to the President. He was a former member of Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, American Legion, Blue Cross-Blue Shield Retirement Group and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Pop was a people person who never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. He loved to dance and was often labeled "the life of the party". He was athletic and enjoyed outdoor activities. He also loved to repair anything or take something apart and reassemble it. However, his greatest love was God and family and that's how he raised his children. Papa was the most compassionate, caring, honest and loyal person one would ever meet. He'll be missed dearly by family and friends.

Sadly he is preceded in death by the love of his life, Kathryn Wade Greenwell (2007) and loving son, Charles Kevin Greenwell (1998).

David is survived by a son, David L. Greenwell (Nancy Smalley); a daughter, Sandra K. Elder (David B.); two sisters, Alice Tangney (Ray) of Arcadia, CA and Mary Ann West; five grandchildren, David Shane Greenwell, Chris J. Yount (Ashley), Dana Derricott, Vicky Purcell (Michael) and Sgt. AF. Adam Elder (Heather); 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Theresa McKenzie for her caregiving skills.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, with interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday, September 2, 2013 at the funeral home.
