SIMON, HELEN TOLIS, of Louisville, wife of Dr. Frank G. Simon, died June 9, 2013 at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Britain, CT, on January 3, 1940, daughter of the late Paul and Olga (Tzias) Tolis, she graduated with honors from New Britain High School. Helen attended St. Joseph College in West Hartford CT, and received a B.A. in 1961 with general honors. She continued her higher education and received a master's degree in biology from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. While there, she was inducted in the Wesleyan Chapter of Sigma Xi, the honorary scientific fraternity whose aim is to encourage research in pure and applied science.
During a graduate summer, she participated in a research program supported by a grant from the National Institute of Health at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, MA. She did post graduate work at Brown University in Rhode Island.
In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by her son. F. Tolis Simon, MD and his wife, Sue; two grandchildren Sarah and Alexis; a sister, Katherine; her brother, Charles and his wife, Mary; and several nephews.
Services were held at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Louisville with burial following at Cave Hill Cemetery.
