BECKMANN, JAMES KENNETH SR., passed away peacefully on October 10, 2012 at the Altenheim, Louisville, KY.

Jim was born on August 5, 1930 in Louisville, KY. He graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1948 and played both Football and Baseball for the Tigers. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954 in San Antonio, TX. He worked for Winn Dixie Food Stores throughout the Southeast and in Louisville until 1976. He owned and operated Beckmann's Gateway Grocery at the Shelbyville Road Plaza from 1976 until 1985. Afterward, he held positions with Voortman's Cookies and Rand McNally.

"Jim, Big Jim, Mr. B., Grandpa, Big Papa, Uncle Jim" loved sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, Louisville Redbirds/ RiverBats/Bats, U of L Cardinals and the St. X Tigers. Jim was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of St. Agnes Parish.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Beckmann; father, Frank Beckmann; and sister, Carol Borst.

He is survived by his five children, Helen B. Raterman (Steve) of Tampa, FL., James K. Beckmann, Jr. (Betsey) of Tucson, AZ., Michael Beckmann (Caroline Knopp) of Louisville, Christopher Beckmann (Kristen) of Louisville and Angela Cronen (Geoffrey) of Tampa, FL.

He dearly loved his eight grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Courtney Raterman, Madison, Caroline and John Henry Beckmann, Everett and Will Beckmann and Grace Cronen; He is also survived by his brothers, Frank (Pat), Charles (Dorothy) and David Beckmann (Jean); his sister, Maryann Craycroft (Ed) and his brother-in-law, Joe Borst. He has many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; and other family as well. His family meant everything to him.

Jim's children would like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers and staff at the Altenheim who took such loving care of our father. We also cannot thank enough Hosparus of Louisville, who gave our dad much comfort and peace in his final days.

Visitation will take place 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Rattermans Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd. A celebration of Jim's life will take place 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1920 Newburg Road in Louisville. He will be laid to rest in a private burial on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at St. Michael's Cemetery.
