HOWERTON, MARTHA FLOYD, 95, passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2013.
She was a native of Casey County, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. D.S. and Atta McClure Floyd, and by her brother, Thomas Floyd, and her sisters Lucille Floyd, Loine Floyd, and Lois Wise. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Davis M. Howerton, Jr., her son Davis M. Howerton III, and her daughter, Leslie H. Barr.
Survivors include her son, John E. Howerton, who was her caregiver, and her grandson, Davis A. Barr, and her niece Mary Ritchie (Carl) of Lexington, KY, and her niece Susie McAninch of Cincinnati, OH.
She was raised in Danville, KY, and was a 1937 graduate of Danville High and a 1941 graduate of Centre College, two institutions to which she maintained a lifelong loyalty. She was a former employee of KU at Herrington Lake and the Jefferson County Board of Education at Male High. She was active in the Louisville Bar Auxiliary through her late husband, who was an attorney, and a lifelong participant of Cabbage Patch Circle. She was also active in her neighborhood of 50 years, Rolling Fields, until recent days when she was limited in her mobility.
She was a shining example of the Greatest Generation and she will be mourned and missed by many, many people.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11a.m. Wednesday at Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at Arch L. Heady-Cralle Funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort Ave.
