BLOW, MERRITT HOWARD, 104, of Louisville, died after an illness on Thursday, February 28, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edythe Johnson Blow. He is survived by his daughter Candice McAllister (Roy) of Atlanta GA; and sons, Greg of Watertown SD and Eric of Louisville; two grandsons, Sean (Sally) McAllister and Adam (Karen) McAllister; and two great-grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth McAllister and Charles Merritt McAllister; his sister-in-law, Lillian Hahn of Sioux Falls SD ; nieces Jackie Franks of Tucson AZ and Cindy (John) Schlimgen of Sioux Falls; and nephews Joe (Theresa) Zeller of Louisville and Mike (Lori) Hahn of Sioux Falls.

Merritt was born on January 10, 1909 and grew up in Dell Rapids SD. He is an alumna of South Dakota State University and earned a Master of Science in horticulture from Louisiana State University. He and Edythe first came to Kentucky in the mid-40s where he worked for Seagram's as the manager of their Experimental Farm in Oldham Co. He was employed by General Electric in 1955 as horticulturist to create the "park-like atmosphere" that once surrounded the property of Louisville's GE Appliance Park. He was a dedicated member of Rotary International and was named a Paul Harris Fellow as well as serving as District Governor. He was a proud founding member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Fern Creek, KY.

Merritt relished his independence until turning 102, traveling, building bird houses and advising friends and family on all matters of horticulture. He spent the past two years in an assisted living facility and enjoyed the new friends he made there.

Memorial service is 4p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church 5903 Bardstown Road. Remembrance and fellowship to follow until 6 p.m. Please join family and friends and share your memories and experiences that made up Merritt's long and rich life. Arrangements under the direction of Pearson's.
