We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Bill Spanos, Jr., loving husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather. Bill passed after a valiant struggle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Born in Temple, TX, Bill graduated from University of California, Riverside. During college, he met the love of his life, Marian Brown to whom he was married for 44 years. Medical school at Loma Linda University was followed by residency in Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson in Houston, TX. He was on faculty at MD Anderson for four years, Loma Linda University for four years, followed by a long distinguished career at University of Louisville. He became Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Louisville and remained in this role for 13 years. In 2012 Bill joined the faculty at University of California at San Diego.

Bill and Marian lived in Louisville for 27 years until they moved to the San Diego area in 2012. Bill was a vital member of his community and served his local church with a loving heart, as an elder and teacher in Bible classes. His home was always a gathering place for entertainment and friendship. Bill was a consummate teacher and mentor. He loved instructing residents and medical students. He had an inquisitive mind and never stopped learning. Bill considered it his privilege to care for others and was their faithful advocate. He believed that each patient was "one of one".

Bill had great wisdom, knowledge, kindness, and a sly sense of humor. He was also a gifted listener with insightful response. He was devoted to his family and will be dearly missed! He leaves behind his loving family: wife, Marian; children, W. Chad (Dana), Stephen (Stephanie); grandchildren, Anna, Alex, Marin, and Corinne; sister, Susan Holcombe (John, John Jr., Lisa and Matt Abbot); uncle, Robert McNiel (Karen and Lawrence).
