William R. Munro Obituary
MUNRO, WILLIAM R., 85, of Huntington, WV, passed away peacefully after a brief illness at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 19, 2013.

He lived most of his life in Louisville, KY and Huntington, WV. He graduated in 1945 with honors from DuPont Manuel all boys High School in Louisville, KY. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1947. He enrolled at the University of Kentucky on the G.I. Bill graduating in 1951 with a degree in Journalism. He worked 20 years for the Rates and Tariff Department at the L&N Railroad. For the last 48 years, he was a restaurant owner/operator and franchise developer for the Bonanza/Ponderosa Corporation, having stores in WV, two in Maryland and eight in Florida. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Guyan Golf and Country Club and was involved with the local Boy Scouts Chapter. Bill was a man of great honor and faith. He was known for his quick wit, humor and stories of Mickey Mantle. He was an accomplished traveler. He was known for his love of journalism in which he wrote many letters, including writing the University of Kentucky Coach John Calipari for which he was an avid lover of U.K. Basketball. Bills love affair with University of Kentucky started when he met his wife Jean of 42 years. Both his children are graduates of U.K. He is a lifetime alumni member at U.K. He served 12 years on the elected alumni board of directors. Bill also had a very special business/friendship with Mickey Mantle in which Bill was very proud of and shared those memories often with friends and family.

He was born October 22, 1927 on the Glenview "Bingham" Estate in Louisville, KY, to the late William James Munro of Aberdeen, Scotland and Elizabeth Charlotte Kennett Munro of London, England. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Jean Lindsey Munro; and a sister, Joan Muriel Munro Harris.

He is survived by a son and caregivers, Winston (Kelly) Munro of Huntington; a daughter, Heather (Eddie) Fryman of Lexington, KY; four grandchildren, Connor, Corey, Haley and Hannah, as well as his loving nieces, Sylvia Betts, Judy Harris and Joan Willinger and a nephew Ivan Harris. He is also survived by a special friend, Louise Bays, friends, Marty Knight and Debbie Walton, a host of co-workers, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1015 5th Avenue, Huntington with Rev. Dr. John Minihan officiating. Committal Service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery, Louisville, KY, with Rev. Tom Vandergriff officiating.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the University of Kentucky Alumni Association, 400 Rose Street, Lexington, KY 40506. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at Beard Mortuary.
