Marea B. Gardner Obituary
GARDNER, MAREA B., Mom passed away after a long, well lived life on March 26, 2014, peacefully in her home at the age of 94.

She will be greeted in heaven by her parents, Robert T. Burke and Marie Murphy Burke; her brothers, Robert, Jr., Richard and Daniel; her sister, Virginia Edelen; and her beloved husband, William A. Gardner.

A lifelong resident of Louisville, she was a graduate of Presentation Academy and Georgetown Visitation Convent (Washington D.C.). She was a devout, faithful Catholic and notably supported Catholic charitable organizations. She was a former Board member of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation. She also served on the Board of Maryhurst for many years, remaining one of their staunch supporters and a Board Member Emeritus since 1958. She was the first recipient of Maryhurst's Good Shepherd Award. In 1995 she was honored by the Catholic Education Foundation as a Catholic School Alumna of the Year. She was a former Treasurer and Finance Chairman of the Junior League, and was active for many years in her husband's business and charitable pursuits.

Mom's love of life was infectious. She was an extraordinarily kind soul with a wonderful personality and wit. A joy to all, her beauty and grace radiated from within. She knew no stranger and all who knew Mom as their friend were forever blessed by her loving, generous spirit. She was a living symbol of the value of family, humor and all that is good in this world.

Mom's memory will always be treasured by her children, William A. Gardner, Jr., (Rebecca), Michael Y. Gardner (Louise), and Marea G. Clark (Thomas); and her four grandchildren, Elyse Raupp-Gardner, Matthew Raupp-Gardner, Thomas Clark Jr., and Meghan Clark; as well as her sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Burke; her step-grandchild's family (Ashley Rodney, Collin and Evan); and many nieces and nephews, and all her dear friends, especially her Book Club.

For many years of loyalty, service and friendship, our family wishes to express its most sincere gratitude to Joseph, Helen, and Bethel, and to her most thoughtful, devoted caregivers Vicky, Kathleen, Gwen, Roni, Kim, Maria, Toni, and Dana who were also her dear friends. Our special thanks to Father Ronald Knott, Mom's spiritual advisor and friend, and to the nurses and personnel of Hosparus for their guidance and extra care of Mom these past few months.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014 at Saint Frances of Rome Church, 2119 Payne Street and burial at Cave Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Nativity Academy, Maryhurst School, or the .

Mom's kindness and generosity touched so many peoples' lives. They knew they had met one of God's true servants.
