Mary Evelyn (Murphy) Potter Obituary
POTTER, MARY EVELYN (MURPHY), 84, passed away April 20, 2014.

She was born in Waddy, KY and graduated from the old Waddy High School. Mary was one of the 11 children of the late Clarence and Rosie Lee Cook Murphy. Mary was retired from Bacon's.

Mary was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Middletown, where she frequently could be found in the kitchen or working on the landscaping. She was an excellent seamstress, a talented cook, and thought nothing of feeding the Wednesday night masses at church or her large extended family at holidays. Mary loved walking, especially on the beach, building gardens, and trying out new recipes. The woman was famous for working hard.

She was preceded in death by brothers Raymond and Samuel Murphy, sisters, Adaline Klayer, Catherine Hundley, and Joyce Abrams. Mary is survived by a brother Alan Murphy and sisters Thelma Combs, Darlene Pulliam, Roberta Shrewsbury, and Margaret McGaughey whom she cared for before Mary suffered a traumatic brain injury. The bond that exists between the eight Murphy sisters was remarkable.

Mary lost her beloved husband of nearly 65 years, Herman in February. Herman said to Mary just before he died, "You are not going to take long, are you Mary?" Left to cherish their memory are their six children, Marilyn Leathers (Steve), Michael Potter (Ellen), Gregory (Cheri) of Indianapolis, Linda McCandless (Larry), Steve Potter (Lesley) and David Potter (Sherri) of Lexington; grandchildren Andrew and Matthew Leathers; Jessica, Nick and Joe Potter, Ben Potter, and Reece Potter; stepgrandchildren Marsha Cloud and Susan Baldridge, Emma and Jakob Ivey, Brian and Ashley Probus, Gail Deaton and Kim McCandless.

A celebration of Mary's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, Middletown, 11721 Main St, 40243, with Dr. Jim Cobban Sr. presiding. Burial to follow at Resthaven. Visitation will be at Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, East Louisville on April 24, 2014, from 3-8 p.m.

Memorial donations can be made to the Elevator Fund at the First Baptist Church, Middletown or Hosparus Louisville.
