At one point he considered a professional baseball career. He was also an avid golfer, bridge player, reader and gardener. In later years before his Alzheimer's progressed, he developed a hobby of collecting vinyl LPs and making mix tapes.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Lila Peterson, and three siblings, John Vance, Joan and Lila Lee. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nola Jean, and by his children, John J. (Kathleen), Joseph S. (Kimberly) and Jenny S. Peterson.
