Wolford, Evelyn C.,
94, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, in Louisville, KY. The only child of Henry F.G. Cox and Alice L. Cox she was raised in Brookline, Boston and Cambridge, MA. She earned a BS degree in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. A promising ballerina in her youth, she remained an avid supporter of the Louisville Ballet and attended their performances every year since its inception in 1952.
While raising seven children she was active in many civic, arts, and religious organizations. She was a life member and former president of the Louisville Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW), a life member and former president of the Kentucky Branch of AAUW, a former president of the Southeastern Region of AAUW, a member and first woman president of The Arts Club of Louisville, a member and president of the University of Louisville Woman's Club, a member and president of the Crescent Hill Woman's Club, and a member and president of the Woman's Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist Convention.
She was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the English Speaking Union and an Associate member of the Pendennis Club.
Her volunteer work included serving as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, working at The Family Place, and for countless years dedicating time as president and as a member of the Emmet Field Elementary School PTA.
For many years she hosted and led book discussion groups, she was the author of prize-winning poetry and co-author with her husband of Going On, (published in 2010), a collection of poetry.
A leader in the community and a leader of her family, she expected the most of people and always saw the best in them.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Thorp L. Wolford; her parents; and her stepfather, George Kourian.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth W. Finch, Linda W. Carter, Stephen T. Wolford (Coretta), Richard T. Wolford (Louise), John B. Wolford (Mary), Mary W. Arnault (Andrew) and Roger J. Wolford (Pam); 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Evelyn's family is grateful to the staff at Home Instead Senior Care and especially Kataria Berry, Betty Gardner and Lisa Dixon for their loving care and kindness freely bestowed.
Funeral service is 1 p.m. Monday at Broadway Baptist Church, 4000 Brownsboro Road with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Pearson's 149 Breckenridge Lane.
