Rudolph Keeling Obituary

KEELING, RUDOLPH WAKEFIELD SR., 89, of Prospect, KY, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2009, surrounded by his family.

Dr. Keeling was born in Nelson County, KY. He was a graduate of Louisville Male High School, the University of Louisville and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry.

He served as a B-29 navigator in the Pacific during World War II. He was a captain on staff of the Hunter Air Force Base's Dental clinic, Savannah, GA, from 1951-52. For his service in World War II he received the Air Medal; American Service Medal; Victory Medal; Unit Citation with 2 clusters; and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with three major campaign stars.

Dr. Keeling had a family dental practice for 40 years on Douglass Boulevard and was a member of Beargrass Christian Church where he served as a deacon in 1962 and an elder in 1976.

He was a member of the U of L Theta chi Delta Honorary chemical Fraternity -1940 and U of L Psi Omega Fraternity-1947. He became a member of the Louisville, Kentucky and American Dental Associations in 1950. He was president of the Louisville Dental Society in 1963 and served as Vice-President of the Kentucky Dental Association in 1970. He was a member of the American College of Dentists-1976 and president of the American College of Dentists Kentucky Section-1981-82.

He served as a member of the U of L Board of Trustees-1976-80; the U of L Foundation -1976; U of L Board of Overseers-1980-86.

He was a member of the Louisville Philological Society and President in 1959. He was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1961.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helene, of 61 years; his parents, George and Zelma Keeling; and two older brothers, Charles and Crawford.

He is survived by daughters, Catherine Keeling Lowe, Sandra Keeling Wainwright (Josh) and Dr. Priscilla Bond-Littrell (Doug); a son, Rudolph "Chip" Keeling Jr. (Lyle); and seven grandchildren, Lisa Lowe Doelker (Billy), Courtney Lowe, Rudolph "Field" Keeling III, Chad Keeling, Kendall Keeling, Brad Bond and Nate Bond.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Pearson's.
