In his typical understated fashion, he summed up his life by saying, "I tried to be a stand up guy and help as many people as I could along the way." He graduated from Seneca High School, class of 1964 and received a B.A. in English from the University of Louisville in 1968.

After his service, Don earned a Masters Degree in English from the University of Louisville. He moved to Denver, CO, in 1980 and worked as a counselor for Vietnam veterans at the VA Vet Center. He earned a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. Don supervised other clinicians, taught classes at the DU and eventually became Deputy Regional Manager for the Vet Center. He counseled veterans at the opening of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC.
In 1988, Don opened a private practice in clinical psychology. He specialized in evaluating and treating people with head injuries. He retired in 2010 after 25 years of dedicated service to his patients.
