SCHAFTLEIN, RAYMOND JOSEPH, 77, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at his home in the East End of Louisville.

He was born March 25, 1935. He was a retired SFC in the U.S. Army and served in the Kentucky Army National Guard for 35 years, working primarily out of the Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort, KY, in the 306th Maintenance Unit and 413th Ordnance Company. He served in many youth sports volunteer positions, including president of the Lyndon Sports Recreation Program and Athletic Director at Mother of Good Council (MGC) Catholic Church. He owned and operated the retail wine and liquor store, Captain's Cellar for the past 25 years. He was active in the Flaget Alumni Association.

As a life-long Louisville resident, Ray attended St. Denis grade school, graduated with the Flaget class of 1953 and attended the University of Louisville, which he truly loved and followed all throughout his life as a loyal fan. He was an accomplished football and baseball player, a member of the 1952 City, Catholic and State Championship team.

Ray was a loving husband, father, friend and coach to many. Ray was always doing his best to live his Catholic faith on a daily basis and he set an example for others by following his religious principles. Ray was among the early parishioners at MGC. He also ushered Sunday church service for decades until the church closed in 2009. He then joined and attended St. Albert the Great.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret E. and Bernard H. Sr.; sister, Margie C. Burks; and brother, Bernard H. Jr.

Survivors: his wife of 55 years, the former Jane Elizabeth Davis; three sons, Mark D. and his girlfriend, Giselle Serrano of Delray Beach, FL, Timothy E. and his wife, Cynthia and their two children, Christopher and Eryk of Lodi, CA, and Charles "Joseph" of Louisville, KY; and a daughter, Shari Margaret and her husband, David H. Johnson of Alexandria, VA.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Albert Catholic Church, 1395 Girard Dr. Burial: St. Michael Cemetery. Visitation: Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Rd., 3-7 p.m. Saturday and 2-7 p.m. Sunday.
