RYAN, BILL, 51, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 of complications from pneumonia.

Bill enjoyed an active and productive life, including family gatherings, vacations, and outings with friends. A huge sports fan, his favorite team was the U of L Cardinals. He especially benefited from time spent in activities geared toward those with developmental disabilities, including Special Olympics swimming programs, work programs at Independent Industries, and day programs at Harbor House and Kaleidoscope. As Bill's Alzheimer's-related dementia worsened and caring for his needs at home became untenable, he entered a new phase in his life; in 2008, he began living at Hazelwood Center, where he encountered a remarkably attentive, skilled, and loving group of caregivers. As Bill's health failed in November and December of this year, Hazelwood staff members did everything possible to care for and comfort him.

He is survived by his loving parents, Bill and Mary Ryan; siblings and siblings-in-law (Angela Ryan, Marty and Kate Ryan, Susan Ryan and Brian Gallup); niece Eden Gallup; uncles, aunts, cousins, and family friends, (Mark, Rachel and Luke Hanley; Joe Ryan; father Don Ryan; Vince, Lisa, Jonathan, Daniel, Amy and Ben Peak; and Chris and Diane Thomas).

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 2-8 p.m. at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road. A Funeral Mass will be held at noon on Friday, December 21, 2012 at Hazelwood's chapel, 1800 Bluegrass Avenue, with burial to follow in Resthaven Cemetery.

All who knew Bill will remember his sense of humor and his love of life. Memorial gifts may be made to Concerned Families of Hazelwood Center, c/o Missy McKiernen, 1800 Bluegrass Avenue, 40215.
