John Heyward Carter Sr. Obituary
CARTER, JOHN HEYWARD SR., 88, was called home to be with his Lord after a long struggle with Alzheimer's dementia on January 8, 2013.

He was a devoted member of Green Street Baptist Church and loved the Lord through song as a member of many choirs over his lifetime. He was a retired businessman and owner of Carlac Coatings Company. He retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving in World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operations. Among his many military accomplishments, he has received two bronze stars, a silver star, a distinguished service cross and three purple hearts.

He saw a lot in his life, didn't believe in handouts, but would always give you a hand and teach you something that you could use. He did a lot for a lot of people.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Millington of Barbados, West Indies.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Louise; his children, John H. Carter Jr., Nathaniel M. Carter (Carla), Walter S. Carter (Tiffany), Lisa Carter-Harris (Kevin) and Jonathan M. Carter; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. on Friday at Green Street Baptist Church, 519 East Gray Street, with his Celebration of Life on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial is in Cave Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by A.D. Porter & Sons, 1300 W. Chestnut Street.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the staff at Friendship Manor Nursing home and with Hosparus.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the .
