SHAPERO, JACK LEONARD, 89, of Louisville, passed away on January 21, 2013 after a long, productive life filled with family and friends.
The Guest Book is expired.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Byck Shapero, who died in 2008.
A 1942 graduate of Louisville Male High School, Jack enlisted in the US Army after graduation. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant during the liberation of France. He was part of an Army contingent that landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, earning battle stars for his service in Normandy and Northern France. After the war, he joined the Army reserve, where he served until 1973, retiring as a Major.
With the exception of World War II, Jack lived his entire life in Louisville, where his exuberant, good spirit was well known to friends and business associates. Returning to Louisville after the war, he opened a florist shop in downtown Louisville. He married the late Lucy Byck Shapero in 1954, closed the flower shop and embarked on a 40 year career as an insurance executive and chartered life underwriter. He served as Sr. Vice President of the Louisville insurance firm Nahm, Turner, Vaughn and Landrum and was a past president of the Louisville Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters. He was a 25 year member of the Louisville Downtown Rotary Club, a life member of the Million Dollar Roundtable and a former board member of Junior Achievement. He was a member of The Temple for more than 50 years.
Jack was devoted to his family, received great joy from his friends and loved to sail, golf, travel and play tennis. He was especially fond of gardening and maintained a reputation for his green thumb, both in the vegetable and flower gardens. He was proud to have produced succulent red tomatoes every year of his adult life until he was physically unable to garden. He was especially pleased when his tomatoes ripened before the Fourth of July. Jack's zest for life, his rich character and his generous spirit will be treasured always by his family and by the many people whose lives were touched by his.
Jack was the son of the late Eli and Jean Shapero of Louisville.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Harriet Kaplan and Thelma Miller.
He leaves behind his daughter, Cathy Dreszer ( Moises Dreszer, M.D.); his two sons, Ken (Dianne Aprile) and Rob Shapero; his three grandchildren, Sara Dreszer, Robbie Clay Shapero and Joshua Shapero (Angelica Serna); his caregiver and dear friend, Midalys Napolis; as well as a multitude of in-laws, cousins, relatives and close friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Jefferson Place, who cared for Jack over the last few years.
There will be a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at The Temple, 5101 US Hwy., 42. Visitation will be after 10:30 a.m. Herman Meyer & Son is in charge of arrangements.
The family request that expressions of sympathy be sent to The Temple.
