DETENBER, GENE H., 86, our beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather peacefully took hold of the Lord's hand on Monday, March 4, 2013 surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Shirley Hubbuch Detenber; three children, Steven Albert (Jenny), Lexington, KY, Teresa Detenber Unrue, Winter Park, FL and Joe Detenber, Louisville, KY; his grandchildren, Evan Albert, Lauren Albert, Alex Detenber and Cameron Unrue and sister, Betty Meyers, of California.

He was a 1945 graduate of St. Xavier High School, where he was inducted to the athletic hall of fame. Gene was a US Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict and a member of American Legion Post 201. After World War II, he attended the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville where he graduated in 1951.

He was a Board Member of the "L" club (alumni) and a Hall of Fame inductee for the Kentucky Football Officiating Association. His love of community, football, sports and young people carried over into his adult life. He was especially influential in the lives of many youths whom he coached over the years in football and track. A faithful servant to God in his daily life, Gene volunteered a lot of his time to this high service and considered it a blessing to give back to his community. He served as director of the Portland Boys Club and board member of the Neighborhood House. He also served as Class Representative for St. X for many years.

Visitation will be Friday at Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Road, from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Frances of Rome with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Xavier Student Aid Fund or Mass of The Air.
