SHAHEEN, ELI, 85 of Louisville passed away Friday, August 2, 2013.
Eli was born February 21, 1927 to Sam and Frieda Shaheen. He was a member of St. Michael Orthodox Church and the Panera Bread Men's Club.
Upon graduation from St. Xavier High School in 1945, he joined the Navy. After completing his service in the Navy he went to work with his father, Sam, at Shaheen's Department Store on Portland Avenue. In 1963 he and his wife, Afaf, opened Shaheen's Department Store in Hikes Point and his family continues to operate three stores in the Louisville area.
He is preceded in death by his parents Sam and Frieda Shaheen and his sister Sarah Shahadey.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Afaf Shaheen and their three sons, Sam (Sherry), Kevin (Denise) and Scott; six grandchildren, Sam, Mike, Stefan, Katie, Evan and Sophie; four great-grandchildren, Frannie, Sammy, Sadie and Abby; brother, Gilbert Shaheen (Jeanette) and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 9 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at St. Michael Orthodox Church, at the corner of Hikes Lane and Furman Blvd., with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1-8 p.m. at Ratterman and Sons funeral home, 3800 Bardstown Road, with Trisagion Prayers at 7:30 p.m.
