GEORGETOWN - Orendorff, Ruth Jean, 85, passed away September 4, 2013 at Autumn Woods Health Campus in New Albany, IN.
She was born February 11, 1928 to George and Icie McCombs of Leitchfield, KY.
After high school Jean was employed at Krogers in Louisville when she met and married Robert (Bob) Orendorff, a captain in the Army at Fort Knox in 1950. Bob was assigned to Germany shortly thereafter, where they lived for three years. Their first daughter Patricia was born in Germany. Bob and Jean had a wonderful four years on the Island of Maui where he was stationed in 1958. After retiring from the Army in 1964, Jean and Bob lived in Georgetown, IN.
Jean was known throughout the area for her large collection of over 300 varieties of hostas and beautiful hosta gardens. She was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph; and sister, Georgia Johnson.
Jean is survived by her husband Bob of 63 years; her four daughters and their husbands, Patricia (Jim) Sheehan, Barbara (Chris) McKinley, Peggy (Bruce) Leidolf, Kim (Andy) Flint; her sister, Scyble Payne; and eight grandchildren. Jean was a loved and loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and those who knew her.
Cremation was chosen and a private memorial service will be arranged at a later date. Scott Funeral Home of Jeffersonville is in charge of the arrangements.
