NEW ALBANY - Karem, Joseph P. Jr., 88, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Norton Hospice Pavilion.
He was born in Louisville and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the former owner and operator of Karem's Meats and was a talented and wonderful singer having won first place at the St. Jude ALSAC Convention Talent contest in 1960.
He was an avid UK fan, loved to garden and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. More importantly, he was a loving and generous dad and Papa Joe to his family, who were "his life." He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Jane Schoeffler Karem; his parents, Joseph P. Karem Sr., Camilla Joseph Karem and Myrtle Karem; and his half-brother, Richard Karem.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hosparus team for the care and comfort they provided our dad and our family.
Survivors include his son, Greg Karem (Debbie); five daughters, Debbie Eckles (Connie), Lynn Hallman, Andrea Greene, Kim LaPilusa (Frank) and Becky DuVall (Joey); his sister, Evelyn Marks; his half sister, Peggy English (Wally); his grandchildren, Emily Byrnes (Matt), Kendall Rutledge (Terry), Sean, Nicole, Abram and Camille Hallman, Eric Greene (Tiffany), Brage Greene (Brandy), Stephanie Olson (Alex), Taylor Gilley (Andrew), Kaelin and Landon Mindel, Jamie Nicholson (Nathan) and Ben DuVall (Sara); 19 great-grandchildren; and his aunt, Christine Borders (Tommy).
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes (1119 E. Market St., New Albany, IN). Visitation will be 1 - 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
