Bernard Thacker Obituary

THACKER, DR. BERNARD THOMAS, 70, of Louisville passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013.

He was born December 6, 1942, in Louisville, son of the late Frank Thacker and Christine Lewis Thacker. He was a graduate of Bellarmine University and received his Doctorate in Psychology from Heed University. He completed his certification in psychoanalysis from the Psychoanalytic Center of New Jersey (now the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis). Inspired by his mentor, Dr. George Frank of New York, with Dr. Paul Adams, Tom founded The Kentucky Psychoanalytic Institute to train mental health professionals to serve the Louisville-area community.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Judith A. Payne; daughter, Dr. Erika Boland (Davis Sr.); grandchildren, Gerald Davis Boland Jr., Grant Thomas Boland and Eliza Katherine Boland; and brothers, Mark Thacker (Michelle) and Terry Thacker (Brenda).

Tom was a man of broad interests and deep loyalties. His commitment to those he loved and the people he treated was complete. His impish smile revealed his playfulness and curiosity; his kind eyes communicated his compassion and gentleness. He enthusiastically embraced life, with the Buddhist understanding that compassion is the antidote to suffering. He loved his dogs and cats, travel, adventure and beauty in every form in which he encountered it. At the end of his days his courage was remarkable; he exercised it both to live life on his own terms and to protect those he loved from distress.

His funeral Mass will be at noon on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at St. Martin of Tours Church, 639 S. Shelby St. with interment of his ashes to occur later at a private service in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, November 25, 2013 at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road. Also on Monday there will be a vigil service including a celebration of Tom's life at 6:45 p.m.

Memorial donations in Dr. Thacker's memory may be made to The Kentucky Psychoanalytic Institute (1326 S. 3rd St., 40208) or Hosparus (3532 Ephraim McDowell Dr; 40205; http://www.hosparus.org/donate-now.php).

Tom you are the epitome of what a psychoanalyst is. Thank you for "re-raising" me. I shall never forget you. How you taught me to let others into my life and to be brave enough to get close to others. I will miss you but your voice will always be with me.

Tom and I had many good times, mostly on the golf course. I know you will miss him, and so will I. He lives a legacy in both of you, his grandchildren and the Kentuckiana Psychoanalytic Institute.
