RADCLIFF - Nichols, CSM (ret.) John E. Sr., 77, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.

Command Sergeant Major (retired) Nichols was a Vietnam War and Korean War veteran and received The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Two Bronze Stars, a Bronze Star with Valor, a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. After retiring from the U.S. Army, he worked for the United States Postal Service and went to college. He was a devoted mason (Past Master) and belonged to Barker Lodge of West Point, KY. He was also a pilot and a member of the Quiet Birdsmen of Vine Grove, KY.
He became a Kosair clown to bring joy to sick children and won the highly coveted Children's Choice award twice. Children and his fellow clowns knew and loved him as "Freckles." He touched many lives throughout his time and will forever be cherished, loved and missed dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertram and Edith Nichols; and his daughter, Patricia Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Gaetane "Annie" Nichols of Radcliff; four daughters, Linda Temple of Louisville, Dianne Mercado of Louisville and Acindia Poturica and Cathy Epperson; two sons, John Nichols Jr. and Pascal Etienne of France; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Radcliff with Chaplain Capt. Malcolm Rios officiating. Burial will be in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, with Military Honors. Visitation will be at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home on Monday from 6-8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m.
