William Waddell Obituary

WADDELL, WILLIAM J., M.D., of Prospect, KY passed away on Sunday afternoon March 2, 2014.

He was born in Commerce, GA on March 16, 1929 and educated at the University of North Carolina receiving a B.A. in Chemistry and an M.D. degree. Immediately after graduating he began his academic career in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina. Later he moved to the University of Kentucky and finally Bill served as Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Louisville for 20 years.

He belonged to numerous scientific societies and served as President of the Association for Medical School Pharmacology and the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Society of Toxicology. Over his career he consulted with many drug and chemical companies, served as an expert witness on toxic tort cases and served on many national committees. He was a visiting Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Showa University in Tokyo for six months where he made lasting friends.

Bill, along with his wife, enjoyed traveling and for many years much of the travel was planned around scientific meetings or invitations to give lectures. However, after Bill retired, traveling with friends to many parts of the world was an annual event.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, John Daniel Waddell and Lillian Vollrath Waddell; sister, Ellen Johnson Dezzutto; brother Dan; and son, Jim.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Marlowe; sons, Bill Jr., (Jane) and Martin (Ann) and daughter, Amy Cannon; five grandchildren, Joe (Anna), Matt (Stacey) and Robert (Sarah) Waddell, Alison and Christopher Cannon; seven great-grandchildren, Aurora, Shane, Evie, Emma, Sydney and Gavin Waddell and Elizabeth Cannon; sister, Cynthia Armstrong; and sister-in-law, Jane Rouse Waddell.

The family wishes to thank his dedicated caregiver, Martha Vokoun, and the staff on 4Park at Baptist Health for their compassionate care.

A memorial service will on March 22, 2014 at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, KY, at 3 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1 p.m.

In memory of Bill's love of music, donations may be made to the Kentucky Opera or the Louisville Orchestra or to the charity of your choice.
