Bruce B. VanDusen Obituary
VANDUSEN, BRUCE B., 83, died peacefully at Pennswood Village in Newtown, PA, on February 16, 2014.

Bruce was born in Toledo, OH, in 1930, the son of Bruce Buick VanDusen Sr., and Helen Campbell VanDusen of Metamora, MI, and Bloomfield Hills, MI. Bruce attended Deerfield Academy and later, Williams College, graduating in 1953.

In 1954, he married Carolyn Perkins of Reading, PA. After serving in the U.S. Army's Counter Intelligence Corps, Bruce returned to teach at Deerfield Academy. In 1959, he began what would become a long and distinguished career as a newspaper journalist, editor and publisher.

Bruce's impassioned editorial writing found its home in such publications as The Providence Journal, The Detroit News, The Louisville Courier-Journal, and The Kokomo Tribune. He was owner/editor of The Voice of St. Matthews, a Kentucky weekly from 1971-1979. Throughout his life he spoke out for civil rights, school integration, women's reproductive rights, fair housing, environmental protection and corporate accountability.

Later returning to academia, Bruce taught English at the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ from 1983-1994 and spent a year on a Fulbright Fellowship in Lewes, England. He later edited the Alumni Magazine at The College of New Jersey.

Bruce was also a skilled sailor, skier, lacrosse and tennis player, a fabulous singer, a gifted gardener and a great dancer.

Bruce is survived by his spouse of 59 years, Carolyn (Perkie) VanDusen of Newtown, PA, daughter Carrie VanDusen of Maplewood, NJ; sons, Philip C. VanDusen and Andrew B. VanDusen of Brooklyn, NY; sister, Kathy VanDusen Sylvester, Burr Ridge, IL; and grandchildren, Matthew and Juliet VanDusen-Gross and Phoebe VanDusen.

Services will be held at Pennswood Village in Newtown, PA, on April 5, 2014 at 10 a.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS, P.O. Box 5023, Hagerstown, MD, 21741-5023.
