Jill (Barnette) Nester

We send our deepest sympathy to each of the family members. Uncle Henlee was my father's oldest brother and we kept in touch over the years and across the miles. He was always our "famous" uncle whom we looked up to, read about and loved.

Our love and prayers are with you.

Rev. Barnette's life of witness for civil rights and justice is made beautifully clear through his daughter Martha, who does the same. We send all our love and prayers to Martha, Debra, and the rest of the family.

Dr. Barnette was my professor, mentor, and friend, both during my MDiv and PhD study of ethics at Southern. I enjoyed visits with Henlee, Helen, and Jim in their home, and always found their living room to be a refreshing haven of good humor, wisdom, and grace. Janie and I send our gratitude and condolences to the family.

When I was an M.Div. student at SBTS, Dr. Barnette had long since retired, but still met students and befriended us. Later, as a Ph.D. student writing (partly) on his friend and mentor, Clarence Jordan, Henlee (by then we were on first name basis!) volunteered hours of

his personal time for taped oral interviews to supplement what I could find of Jordan in print. He deeply blessed my life and I extend deep condolences to his family. I regret that we lost touch during the last few years, though I still live in the area and kept telling myself to visit him, again.

I met Dr. Barnette in 1962 when I became manager of the seminary book store. I had seven wonderful years on the seminary campus serving Dr. Barnette and the other fine professors and students. My wife and I grew to love Henlee and will truly miss him.

I graduated from SBTS in December 1976. Then, the campus climate was much different, but the "storm" was being to gather. Though I don't remember taking any of Dr. Barnette's classes, he was a much respected professor and a remarkable human being. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

I extend my sympathies to each of the Barnette family members. I was a student of Dr. Barnette's in 1976. He was a wonderful teacher who influenced me deeply in my thought and life. I have often recalled his ethical decision making principles during my 23 years in ministry. Truly, a giant of a human being has fallen. Sursum Corda

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father's life was a remarkable one, as you know so well. And I remain most grateful for my contact with your family in the early 1970s. You are all in my prayers.

Most warmly,

Steve
