Velez, Rafaela (Martí)  
Rafaela (Martí) Velez Formerly of Ayer; 91 AYER -- Rafaela (Martí) Velez, 91, formerly of Ayer, died Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at The Highlands, Fitchburg surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Velez was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on October 24, 1923. She was the daughter of Lucrecia Gonzalez Martí and Pedro Juan Martí, and the sister of the late Lydia and brother, Ismael Martí. Surviving siblings include Mirta Martí-Mongtignier, Pedro Juan Martí, Aida Martí Rivera, Wilfredo Martí, Lillian Martí-Hernandez and Gilberto Martí. Rafaela was a proud member of the Ayer Community for 44 years. She was the wife of the Ayer Veteran's Agent, CW3 Manuel Velez, who passed away on August 6, 2009. Spending time with family, gardening and traveling to Puerto Rico were some of Rafaela's most enjoyable activities. On March 9, 1988, she proudly accepted recognition for her outstanding and dedicated service as a receptionist for the Directorate of Engineering and Housing Post Billing Branch on Fort Devens for 16 years and was affectionately known there as "Rafy". She attended the Parish of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Leominster where she was inspired by Father Jose Rodriguez. Rafaela leaves three daughters, Brenda Velez Rodriguez and son-in-law, Juan Rodriguez of Shirley, Marlene Velez O'Brien of Plymouth, and Linda Velez Scullane of Shirley; seven grandchildren, Adam M. Rodriguez, Tyler J. Rodriguez, Jordan M. Rodriguez, Evan O'Brien and wife, Billi Solis-O'Brien, Ian O'Brien, Celia Scullane, Felicia Scullane; and great-grandson, Dean M. Aubuchon. Rafaela's greatest joy was being a devoted mother and a grandmother to her family. VELEZ -- Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Tuesday, October 6th at the Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Rd., (Rte. 2A) Ayer. Please see for additional information. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mrs. Velez's family will receive family and friends on Tuesday from 10 am until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
