LOWELL -- Francis X. Carr, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died May 13, 2013, in Lowell, after a brief illness, aged 86 years. He was the beloved husband of Iris A. (Ogden) Carr, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage last November.

Born in Lowell, July 27, 1926, the son of the late James D. and Agnes G. (Carr) Carr. He received his early education in the Lowell school system, and graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1944.

Mr. Carr enlisted in the U. S. Navy on February 5, 1944, and served as Seaman, First Class, aboard the USS St. Joseph River LSM(R)-527 and the USS Theodore E. Chandler DD-717. He received the WW II Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal, and was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946. After proudly serving his country, he furthered his education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Forestry.

He began his career with the U. S. Forest Service, where he worked for several years. He then became associated with IBM, where he worked as a Customer Engineer for over 36 years, retiring in 1996. During his career at IBM, Francis earned an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering at the Lowell Technological Institute.

Francis was an Extraordinary Minster at St. Margaret Church, and in earlier years a member of the St. Margaret bowling league. After retirement, he volunteered at the Museum of Science in Boston and at the Former Saints Medical Center, where he brought Holy Communion to the sick.

He was a kind, generous man who will always be remembered for his love and devotion to the church and his family, especially his cherished grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy C. Fowler of Lowell, and three sons; Brian X. Carr and his wife Paula, and Michael F. Carr and his wife Karen, all of Lowell, and Kevin J. Carr and his wife Janet of Wenham, MA. Eleven grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, three nephews and one niece. He was the brother of the late Herbert J. Carr and Margaret (Carr) Phythian, and father-in-law of the late Robert J. Fowler.
