Professor Emeritus; age 83

TYNGSBOROUGH -- Mr. Gabor S. Szava-Kovats, age 83, a resident of Tyngsborough and a former resident of Lowell, died on Friday morning, December 27, 2013, with his family by his side.

Born in Budapest, Hungary on January 4, 1930, he was a son of the late Josef and Katalina (Resch) Szava-Kovats.

In 1956, Gabor graduated from the Technical University of Budapest with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He later earned his M.S. in Geodetic Science from Ohio State University. Gabor also attended Cornell University for his PHD studies.

Prior to his retirement, he was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Lowell in their Civil Engineering department, as well as, owned and operated an engineering and surveying business.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Tyngsborough and had much enjoyed classical music, gardening and writing.

He is survived by his loving family which includes his spouse Maria Szava-Kovats of Tyngsborough; his children, Andrew Szava-Kovats and Deborah Elston of Lowell, and Steven Kovats of Wilmington, MA; a son-in- law, James Major of Wilmington, MA; and a brother, Andrew Szava-Kovats of Budapest, Hungary.

SZAVA-KOVATS -- died in Lowell on Dec. 27, 2013. Mr. Gabor S. Szava-Kovats, age 83, and a resident of Tyngsborough. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visiting hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial mass on Saturday morning, Jan. 4, at 10 o'clock at St. Mary Magdalen Parish, 95 Lakeview Ave., Tyngsboro, MA.
