Howard S. Harmon, age 86, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at his son's home, with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Fleurette R. (Mercier) Harmon who died in 1992.
Born in Lowell on October 7, 1926, he was a son of the late Lucien and Ruby (Johnstone) Harmon.
He was a prominent Lowell Businessman, having been the founder of Harmon's Paint and Wallpaper in Downtown Lowell, a family business that has been in operation since 1962.
An avid sportsman, he loved traveling to such places as Russia, Alaska, Scotland, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Pennsylvania, Canada as well as the Northeast to hunt and fish. Sundays were often spent driving the back roads of New England for a chance to spot a deer, a moose or a bear. He also enjoyed riding around in his old Rolls Royce.
For decades he moonlighted as a jazz drummer for several bands including that of jazz legend Billie Holiday.
He was an active member of the Lowell Kiwanis Club, Teamsters union, Musicians union and a founding member of the Greater Lowell Landlords Association.
During World War II
he tried to volunteer but was rejected because of childhood polio. Until recently he hosted an annual cookout for disabled veterans at his house, making sure that everyone left with a gift, be it a Red Sox cap, a Patriots tee shirt, a knife sharpener or a jar-opener.
He dearly loved his country and his family, whose roots in Massachusetts, go back to 1635.
