James F. 'Jim' Molloy
Recipient of the 2013 Retired Teacher
of the Year Award
LOWELL -- James F. 'Jim' Molloy, 74, of the Highlands section of Lowell, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. He was the husband of Joyce M. (Winn) Molloy for 56 years.
Born May 4,1939, in Lowell, he was a son of the late James J., and the late Delia E. (Ryan) Molloy. He attended local schools including St. Margaret's Grammar School, Keith Academy, Lowell Tech., and Northeastern University before completing his education with a Masters degree from the University of Lowell.
He resided in the Highlands section of Lowell, and was a communicant of St. Margaret Parish. He was employed as a teacher in the Lowell Public Schools, teaching mathematics at the Bartlett School, and Lowell High School, where he taught mathematics for 26 years before retiring in 2001. At the end of the 2013 school year he was honored by his peers as the Retired Teacher of the Year.
Jim was very active in community service, serving as a Coach, Manager and League Secratary for the Callery Park Little League. Jim was also active in many political causes at the local, state and national levels, including serving as Chair to the City of Lowell Health Insurance Advisory Committee, Member of the United Teachers of Lowell Executive Board, Delegate to the A.F.L. - C.I.O State Conventions, and was Elected First Male Alternate for Jimmy Carter to the Democatic National Convention.
He enjoyed spending his winters in N. Fort Myers, Florida, where he enjoyed the Red Sox Spring Training, and spending his summers in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, where he served at the Curator for the OOB Historical Society. More than anything else, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a proud supporter of his grandson Brian Gagnon's Olympic goals, and supported him through the New Jersey, New York Track Club.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by his four children, James F. Molloy Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Dedham, Robert M. Molloy of Lowell, Karen A. Gagnon of Dracut, and Michael P. Molloy and his wife, Tara of Saco, ME; his grandchildren, Ryan Molloy, Shannon Molloy, Sean Molloy, Catherine Molloy, Peter Molloy and his wife, Amy, Jarad Gagnon, Brian Gagnon, and Armand Blanchard; and two great-grandchildren, Frankie and Kevin Molloy. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Campbell, Gloria Desmond, Deborah Taylor and her husband, John; and many cousins, friends, nieces and nephews.
He was the father-in-law of the late Leo T. Gagnon, and also the brother-in-law of the late Joan Kouble, Edward 'Buddy' Winn, John Desmond, John Campbell, and Paul Parent.
