John F. De Silva
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather
John F. De Silva, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died May 12, 2013, at Lowell General Hospital, after a lengthy illness, aged 73 years. He was the beloved husband of Janice A. (Lawrence) De Silva with whom he would have celebrated 53 years of marriage in June.
Born in Lowell, September 17, 1939, the son of the late John and Mary (Fernandes) De Silva. He received his education in the Lowell school system and graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1957. He earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from Burdett College in Boston.
Mr. De Silva enlisted in the Massachusetts Army National Guard on June 2, 1959, and served with the 1st Squadron, 16th Calvary, as an Armor Intelligence Specialist. He was honorably discharged on June 1, 1965.
He became associated with Keystone Credit Union in Boston as Treasurer for several years. He then served as Comptroller for several construction companies in the greater Lowell area, and as an accountant at the Pollard Memorial Library, before retiring in 1994. Also he was a Licensed Real Estate Broker and Realtor and owned many properties in the Lowell area.
Mr. De Silva was a proud sponsor of the St. Anthony's Church Annual Festival, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus in Tewksbury, and was on the Board of Directors of the Lowell Co-operative Bank and a Notary Public for over 25 years.
John enjoyed spending time with his family at their home on Cape Cod, especially with his cherished grandchildren.
He was a kind, generous man who was always ready to help anyone at any time. He will always be remembered for his devotion to his wife and family, and commitment to his church and community.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy E. De Silva of Pembroke, MA and Karen L. Herard and her husband Steven J. of Auburn, MA. Two grandchildren, Kimberly and Matthew, and several nieces and nephews.
