OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine -- Joseph J. Slattery Jr., 85, died Friday, May 17th, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family. For 61 years, he was the devoted husband of Mary J. (Scannell) Slattery.

He was born in Lowell, MA, a son of the late Joseph J. Slattery Sr. and the late Kathleen (Smith) Slattery. He resided in the Highlands and Belvidere sections of Lowell. There he raised his family of eight children. He started his work life at Slattery's Market in Dover Square in Lowell. Before retiring, Mr. Slattery was a Cable Splicer for New England Telephone & Telegraph.

He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church of Lowell, MA, and then Saint Margaret's Church of Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

He was a lifetime member of the BPOE Elks Club (0087) of Lowell, MA, and also and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mr. Slattery served in the U.S. Navy, and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Besides his wife, Mr. Slattery is survived by his three sons and five daughters, Mary Jo Slattery and her husband, Andy Stewart, of Enfield, NH, Patricia Norman and her husband, William of Lawrence, MA, Ann Slattery of Gorham, ME, Joseph Slattery and his wife, Lynne of Pelham, NH, Margaret Beaulieu and her husband, Jean, of Bernard, ME, Robert Slattery and his wife, Kathryn, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, Thomas Slattery of Annapolis, MD, Cornelia Clair and her husband, Michael of Biddeford, ME.

He was devoted to his 17 grandchildren, Bernadette, Willa, Agnes, Justin, Julie, Michael, Joseph, Elizabeth, Sean, Joe, Anne, MaryKate, Colleen, Bobby, Norah, Michael, and Cameron.

Mr. Slattery loved Old Orchard Beach and moved there permanently upon his retirement. He spent many joyous years there until the time of his death.

He was predeceased by his brother, John Slattery. He is survived by his sisters, Ellen Scannell of Lowell, MA, Mary Boland of Bradford, MA, and Charles Slattery of Rye, NH.

SLATTERY -- In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211-1807. Viewing hours will be held Tuesday, May 21st from 4 to 7 pm at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St,, Saco, Maine. A Catholic Mass will be held Wednesday 11:00 AM at St. Margaret Catholic Church 6 Saco Ave. Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Burial will follow with military honors at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Beach St., Saco, Maine.
