Mary (Rouses) Karafelis
of Lowell; 89
LOWELL -- Mrs. Mary (Rouses) Karafelis, 89, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013 at the Lowell General Hospital in Lowell.
She was born April 22, 1924 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the eldest daughter of George and Soultana (Gogou) Rouses. She was the beloved wife of 64 years of the late Arthur Karafelis, who died in 2009.
Mrs. Karafelis attended the Lowell Public Schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1942. Upon graduation from high school during World War II
, she was employed by the Boott Mills in Lowell, assigned to the Payroll Department, and served as a volunteer Red Cross Nurses Aid at the former St. Joseph's Hospital. Prior to her retirement as a Department Administrator for the Mitre Corporation in Bedford, she was employed as a stitcher for the Robert Leonard Company, and held secretarial positions at Raytheon, and Symphonic Electronics in Lowell. She worked overseas for the US State Department for three years, involved in the modernization of the Greek Military.
Mrs. Karafelis was also a member and former President of the National Secretaries Association, Merrimack Valley Chapter.
Arthur and Mary traveled extensively visiting many countries over the years. She enjoyed baking Greek pastries, and was skilled at embroidery, crochet, and needlepoint, and has created many family heirlooms. She was proud of her puzzle solving skills, and loved to complete the most difficult crossword puzzles in ink. She had an exceptional intelligence, great wisdom, and was vivacious and positive every day of her life.
The family would also like to thank the staffs of the Willow Manor Nursing Home and Lowell General Hospital for the wonderful care and attention provided to Mrs. Karafelis.
She is survived by her sons, Anthony David Karafelis, of Lowell, and Dr. Plato Karafelis and his wife Sharon of West Hartford, CT; two grandchildren, Alexis and Chloe Karafelis; her niece and sister-in-law, Elaine Karafelis and her husband James, of Nashua, NH; cousins, Olympia Rigopoulos and her husband Ted of Chelmsford, MA; and Chris Simorellis, Marie Spadano, and Arthur Cemorellis; also several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Lowell Police Officer
Christos Rouses, Bessie Mastacouris, and Jean (Mimi) Rouses.
