Thomas F. "Tom" Joyce Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather U.S. Air Force Veteran -- WESTFORD -- Thomas F. "Tom" Joyce, a longtime resident of Westford, died June 29, 2013, in Westford, after a brief illness, aged 77 years. He was the beloved husband of Caroline (Witkowski) Joyce, with whom he would have celebrated 56 years of marriage this October. Born in Boston, August 16, 1935, a son of the late Thomas A. and Genevieve (Gleason) Joyce. He received his early education in the Whitestone, New York school system and was a graduate of Chelsea High School with the Class of 1953. He furthered his education at Boston University, where he earned an Associate's Degree in Science, and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Summa Cum Laude, from Northeastern University. Mr. Joyce enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on November 20, 1956, serving with the 1st Armament and Electronics Maintenance Squadron as a Senior Airman, First Class. He received the Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged on November 19, 1962. After proudly serving his country, he became affiliated with Honeywell as an Engineer, where his long, distinguished career included the development of 35 US Patents in the field of computer science. His pioneering contributions to the world of technology included advancements in the Pentium Processor, which continue to influence most computers used today. Tom was twice presented with the prestigious H. W. Sweatt Award, Honeywell's highest recognition for outstanding ability and contributions, bestowed on only the top .3% of Scientists and Engineers. His patents created numerous product success stories for companies such as NEC, Intel, Honeywell, Bull, and RPX, to name a few. Tom loved music, all things electronic, and gadgets of any kind. Infinitely more than any of his awards or accomplishments, he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends, especially on the holidays, and just hanging out with his cherished grandchildren. Tom had a wonderful voice, and would often spontaneously serenade his wife in song. -- He was a devout communicant of St. Catherine of Alexandria Church of Westford. Besides he wife Caroline, he is survived by three sons, James A. Joyce and his fiancé Alane C. Zuppa of Arlington, Thomas S. Joyce of Washington D.C., and Brian E. Joyce and his fiancé Debbie Walton of Lunenburg; two daughters, Barbara A. Joyce of Fitchburg, and Eileen M. Joyce of Westford. Six grandchildren, Michelle M. Gallant and her fiancé Matthew Anderson of Maynard, Jessica L. Gallant of Fitchburg, James A. Joyce and Jason A. Joyce, both of Somerville, Justin A. Joyce of Lowell, and Jared A. Joyce of Arlington; one great-granddaughter, Stella C. Anderson. Two sisters, Priscilla Burke and Elizabeth Joyce, both of Chelsea, and many nieces and nephews.
