Walter J. 'Varge' Mackey
Beloved husband, father,
grandfather, and great-grandfather
LOWELL -- Walter J. "Varge" Mackey, 82, a lifelong Lowell resident, died peacefully, Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at Palm Center in Chelmsford. He was the devoted husband to Janet (Morris) Mackey, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
A son of the late William and the late Alice (Golas) Mackey, he was born September 25, 1931, in Lowell, attended St. Stanislaus Grammar School for eight years, and then graduated from Lowell High School, Class of 1950.
Mr. Mackey served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict
. He was a former member of the Chelmsford Lodge of Elks, B.P.O.E. #2310.
Formerly a communicant of St. Joseph Lithuanian Church, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish. He cherished time spent with family, and loved to garden, feeding the birds, swimming, and working in the yard. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing.
He retired from Raytheon Corporation in Andover as a group leader in inspection, having worked for Raytheon for over 37 years.
In addition to his loving wife, Janet, he is survived by his children, Cheryl A. Conceicao of Hudson, NH, Gail LeBlanc and her husband, Warren, of Lowell, and John J. Mackey and his wife, Nancy, of Pelham, NH; his grandchildren, Eric and his fiancée, Rachael and their daughter, Ava, and Adam Conceicao, Sean and Alicia LeBlanc, Amanda, Ariana and Joshua Mackey; his sisters, Anna Westphal of Boscawen, NH, and Sophie Wright and her husband, Glenn, of Wilton, NH; his
sister-in-law, Eileen Mackey of Andover, NH; and several nieces, nephews, and longtime friends, including Don and Helen.
Walter's family would also like to recognize and thank the loving and caring staff at the Palm Center for the passionate care he received during the past year.
He was also a brother of the late Mary Wallace, the late Jenny Margosian, the late Helen Smith, the late John Makiej, the late Alexander "Sam" Mackey, and the late Stanley 'Jake' Mackey.
