Wellman E. Parker
Retired Ayer Fire Chief, Navy Vet; 85
AYER -- Wellman E. Parker, 85, of Ayer, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at Nashoba Valley Medical Center, Ayer.
Mr. Parker was born in Ayer, July 31, 1927, a son of Wellman N. and Lucy W. (Millson) Parker and resided most of his life in Ayer. He was a 1945 graduate of Ayer High School.
Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted and served in the United States Navy
At the conclusion of WWII
, after his discharge from the armed services, he began working as an apprentice electrician for his father at Parker Electrical Service, a business he continued to operate for over 40 years before turning it over to his son, Alan, in 1988.
He served the Town of Ayer as its wiring inspector and Emergency Management Director from 1992 until 2010.
He was a member of the Ayer Fire Department for nearly 40 years. Wellman was appointed to the Ayer Fire Department on July 1, 1954 rising through the ranks to Lieutenant on January 1, 1963; Captain on April 6, 1966 and Deputy Chief January 1, 1973. He was appointed Chief of Department on September 6, 1988 and served in that capacity until his retirement on July 1, 1992.
He was a member and Past Master of the Caleb Butler Lodge of Masons in Ayer, a member of the Order of DeMolay Chevalier and a former member of the Ayer-Shirley Lions Club.
Mr. Parker is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma M. (Melendy) Parker; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra M. and Michael Walden of Concord, NH; three sons and daughters-in-law, Alan M. and Susan Parker of Groton, Norman W. Parker and Gail Rahikka of Gardner, David P. and Carol Parker of Eldorado Hills, CA; a brother, Ernest Parker of Deland, FL; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Barbara Pike of Arizona.
