Obituary Condolences

Alexander W. Wilson
of Methuen, MA, decorated WWll Vet; 98

HAMPTON FALLS, New Hampshire -- Long-time resident of Methuen's Glen Forest area, Alexander W. Wilson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 23rd, 2012 of natural causes. His journey reflects the history of Massachusetts' Merrimack Valley of the 20th century.

He was born to a firefighter and his wife in Lawrence on February 9, 1914. His father died four years later in the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918, and together with his younger brother, Fred, he went to live with his extended family in Richibouctou Village, New Brunswick, Canada until many returned to Lawrence for the opportunities afforded by the mills.

Alex became the youngest loom fixer in Lawrence, for which he was very proud. That saw him through the Great Depression until duty called and he became an Antitank Commander in the European Theater of World War II. For his actions and injuries suffered on the beaches of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

But he did not identify with the role of warrior as much as the roles of husband, father, uncle, friend, neighbor, parishioner and worker. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service, Andover, MA in 1980.

His beloved wife, Helen Louise McKinley, predeceased him by 13 years. He is survived by two daughters, Gail Wilson-Gomer, her husband, David Gomer of MA, and his daughter, Nancy M. Wilson of NH; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

WILSON -- There are no calling hours. A celebratory Mass will be at 10 AM on Friday, December 28th at Our Lady of Good Council Parish, St. Theresa Church, 22 Plymouth St., Methuen, MA 01844. The church has an elevator accessed on one floor through the parking lot in the back. Services will conclude at the Elmwood Cemetery, 130 North Lowell St., Methuen, MA. Memorial contributions may be made to Lazarus House Ministries, Inc., c/o Bridget Shaheen, 412 Hampshire St., Lawrence, MA. 01841. For further information, contact Charles F.
