Beloved mother and grandmother

ACTON -- Barbara L. (Phelps) Bailey, 87, of Acton, died peacefully Sun. Aug. 26, 2012 at the Apple Valley Nursing Center in Ayer. She was the beloved wife of the late George Stuart Bailey, who died this past December 31st.

Born and raised in Rumford, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Archie E. and Ruby (Tufvesson) Phelps. Mrs. Bailey and her husband met through mutual friends, and were married in Rumford on June 9, 1951. They settled in Acton in 1954, where they enjoyed their active life raising their four sons born in 5 years. Mrs. Bailey was an assembler in the high-tech electronics field, and was employed by Raytheon, Bowmar and Data Terminal Systems, and later worked for the Acton schools in food service. A former Cub Scout leader, she loved time spent with her family at their camp in Leeds, Maine. She also enjoyed knitting for family and friends, especially sweaters and mittens, and always had lots of pairs on hand for the neighborhood children.

She is survived by her sons, Mark Bailey and wife, Eileen, and Eric Bailey and wife, Debra, all of Pepperell, Jon Bailey of Boxborough, and R. Scott Bailey and wife, Holly, of Rockwood, Maine; a brother, Duane Phelps of Rumford, Maine; 9 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Robert, Merle and Alan Phelps, and Lorraine Groleau.

Aug. 31st from 10am to 12 noon at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave. (Rte 111) Acton. A funeral service following at 12 noon at the funeral home with Rev.
