Cornelius J. 'Neil' Bohane, Jr.

SOUTH YARMOUTH, MA -- Cornelius J. "Neil" Bohane of South Yarmouth, passed away peacefully at his home, after a brief illness surrounded by his extended family on Wednesday July 30, 2014.
Cornelius is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pauline V. (McAuliffe) Bohane; son, Neil E. Bohane; daughters, Colleen Hamlin and her husband, Rick, Jacqueline Derrick, and sons, William P. Bohane and his wife, Nicole, Matthew J. Bohane and his wife, Mary Kate, Steven T. Bohane, Timothy P. Bohane and Colleen Nixon; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Michael K. Bohane.
He was the son of Cornelius and Mary Bohane, and was the oldest of 10 children.
Cornelius was born, raised, and educated in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. He was a 1948 graduate of Jamaica Plain High School, serving as captain of his high school hockey team.
He served admirably on the icebreaker WESTWIND and the cutter MACKINAC for the United States Coast Guard.
Upon his discharge from the US Coast Guard, Cornelius followed his father's footsteps and joined the New England Telephone Company(Verizon), retiring after 38 years of service in 1988. Throughout his years, Cornelius was a dedicated husband, father, coach, mentor, and friend. He was instrumental in building the youth hockey programs in Billerica, MA and Dennis and Yarmouth on Cape Cod, building ice rinks, running hockey clinics, refereeing hockey games, and driving the Zamboni.
He was an avid sailor, hockey player, and golfer, and had a particular attachment to the ocean, captaining his 26 foot sailboat, Papillion, on Nantucket Sound whenever possible. He loved cruising along the roadways and beaches of Cape Cod, always checking on the tides, wind, the wildlife, and boat traffic on Bass River.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 4, 10:30 -1:30 PM at the Morris, O'Connor and Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow at Chandler Grey Cemetery in West Yarmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cornelius' name to the VNA Hospice of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.
