of Lincoln, NH, and formerly of Lowell, MA

U. S. Army Veteran

LINCOLN, NH -- Daniel George Thurston, 78, of Lincoln, NH, formerly of Lowell, MA, died unexpectedly on January 13, 2014, at Iredell Memorial Hospital, in Statesville, NC, with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved companion of Carol Micalizzi.

Born in Lowell, February 9, 1935, a son of the late George and Doris (Irish) Thurston. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Thurston.

Daniel received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Fitchburg. In addition, he had advanced schooling at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. He enlisted in the Army Reserves during his years at school in Fitchburg. Daniel enlisted in the U. S. Army on April 5, 1957. He went on active duty for two years stationed at Ft. Dix and Ft. Bragg, as well as in Germany and France. He was honorably discharged on March 23, 1959.

"Mr. T", as many knew him by, retired from the Lowell School system after 38 years as a dedicated teacher with the Butler, JG Pyne, Daley and Rogers Middle Schools, and Lowell High School, where he also coordinated sports activities.

Daniel leaves to cherish the memory of his life to his dear friend and companion, Carol, two daughters, Diane (Thurston) Pettingill of Cleveland, NC, and Sarah Thurston of Statesville, NC, and two sons, Daniel Thurston of Canyon Country, CA, and Eric Thurston of Lowell, MA.

Daniel had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Jessica (Jefferey) Galliher and their son, Parker of NC, Donald Pettingill IV (LaChelle Hurt) and their sons, Donald V and Ethen, of NC, Jennifer (Kevin) Weber, and their children Kolby and Kortney of NC, Dustin Pettingill of NC, Mackenzie Thurston of CA, Forsythea Mooe of NC, and Alexandra Mooe of NC. Daniel is survived by a brother Donald Thurston. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Joanne (Hill) Thurston, as well as many aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Daniel was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes and St. Margaret Churches of Lowell, where he sang in both choirs. He was an active member and director of the Divorced and Separated Group of St. Michael's Church, a member of the Lowell Mass. Teachers' Organization, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National Education Association.

In his free time, Dan enjoyed playing chess, checkers, cribbage and most any card game. Blessed with a great sense of humor, he was always ready to share a good joke with family and friends. He also had a passion for trains. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

During their retirement, Dan and Carol traveled extensively throughout the country, and visited family and friends in California, Maine, Texas, Virginia, New Hampshire and North Carolina.

THURSTON -- In Statesville, NC, January 13, 2014. Daniel George Thurston, of Lincoln, NH, formerly a longtime resident of Lowell, MA aged 78 years. Beloved companion of Carol Micalizzi. Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., Lowell, on Thursday from 8 to 9 AM, followed by his Funeral Mass to be held at St. Margaret Church, Stevens St., Lowell, at 9:30 AM.
