CHELMSFORD -- Donald Elmore McElman Sr., of Chelmsford, MA, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013. His health declined after his wife, Patricia McElman, of 66 years died two months earlier. Don was surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Portland, ME on April 10, 1922, he was the son of the late Clarence E. McElman and Catherine M. (Broderick) McElman. He was a graduate of Lexington High School with the class of 1939. He also graduated from Fish Burwess Business College in 1941.
Don served with the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer with the Seabees during WWII.
He was employed with Perkin's Machinery in South Boston and then went on to work at Southworth Machinery in Hopkinton, MA until his retirement in 1988.
He is survived by a son, Donald Jr., and his wife, Leslie McElman of Milford, MA; two daughters, Sandra Hatfield of Tucson, AZ, and Catherine and her husband, Ed Sousa, of Brooks, ME; one brother, Edwin and his wife, Louisa McElman of Concord, MA; one sister, Janet and her husband, William Hamilton of Piermont, NH; one son-in-law, Stephen Hatfield of Chelmsford; one brother-in-law, Arthur and his wife, Ellen Curtin of Billerica; seven grandchildren, Brian Hatfield and his fiancée, Emily Campbell, Terry Hatfield, Andrew Sousa, Adam Sousa, Alicia Sousa, Sarah McElman, and Andrea and her husband, Jason Marotta; several nieces, nephews, and close friends.
He was the father of the late Nancy McElman of Chelmsford, who died November 14, 2013, and the late Stephen McElman of The Villages in Florida, who died September 29, 2012.
McELMAN -- Donald E. McElman Sr., of Chelmsford, MA, died November 18, 2013. A ceremony honoring Donald and his daughter, Nancy Jane McElman will be held Friday, Nov. 22 at 11 am at the Central Baptist Church, 9 Academy St., Chelmsford.
