THE VILLAGES, FL -- Earle William Nichols, Jr., 74, of The Villages, FL, formerly of Lowell and Dracut, MA, died Thursday morning, November 15, 2012, at the Fairhaven Nursing Home in Lowell, after a long illness.

He was married to Mrs. Barbara (Vaillancourt) Nichols with whom he celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on October 19, 2012.

Earle was the son of the late Earle W. and Mary Nichols, Sr. He was raised and educated in Lowell, MA.

Mr. Nichols served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.

Mr. Nichols was a former Building Inspector for the City of Lowell until his retirement in 1998. He previously worked for J.T. Maguire Construction as a Foreman.

He was a former member of the Lowell ELKS Post 87.

Earle was an avid golfer who enjoyed bowling and billiards. He was most happy spending quality time with family and friends.

Besides his wife, Barbara, he is survived by three sons and their wives, F. Kenneth and Carmel Silva of Lowell, MA, L. Keith and Diane Silva of Ashland, NH, Earle W. and Lori Nichols, III of Haverhill, MA, a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Salley of Kingston, TN; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and several close family friends.

He was the brother of the late Robert E. Nichols of Lowell who died in August of 1967, and Eleanor Fadden of Dracut who died in March of 1997.
