of Lowell, MA
LOWELL, MA -- Elizabeth Jean (Welt) Wetherbee of Lowell, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at the Cape Regency Nursing home in Centerville on January 29.
The second daughter of the late Barbara and Milton Welt of Harwich, and the wife of the late John A. Wetherbee, of Westford, Liz was born in Quincy on May 8, 1944. She grew up in Harwich, and was a 1962 graduate of Harwich High School.
Both artistically and musically gifted, Liz attended Vesper George School of Art, and graduated from Lowell State University with a degree in music education. She taught in the public school system for a few years, but found her life's love and career in directing the choirs at both the First Congregational Church of Billerica for over twenty years, and most recently at the First-Calvary Baptist Church in Andover. She was also the director of the Merrimack Valley Chorale for many years. Beej is well known for her great love and appreciation for all the wild birds and spent many memorable times with friends and family observing them on Plum Island and in the marshes and beaches of Cape Cod. She also loved games and cards, and most of all, sitting around singing with her parents and sisters. The Welt sisters sang together regularly in church, and at many functions on the Cape. With her beautiful mellow and soulful voice, she was highly sought after to solo at weddings, funerals, and concerts. Also very artistic, Liz would sell her beautiful and whimsical arts and crafts at the annual church fair.
Liz leaves her three children, Guy M. Wetherbee and his wife Kerry of Atkinson, New Hampshire, Dean A. Wetherbee, and his wife Janet of Amesbury, and Amy M. Roemer and her husband John, of Wisconsin and her grandchildren, Benjamin, Isabel and Jackson Wetherbee, and Helen Roemer.
Liz is also survived by her two loving sisters, Drusilla Sunderman of Centerville and her husband, Herb, and Sue Lindholm of Sandwich, and her husband Carl, and several nieces and nephews and their families including Susan Lumenello, of Jamaica Plain, Scott Lumenello, of Worcester, Jeff Lindholm of Somerville, Brett Lindholm of Plymouth, and Mark Lindholm of Vancouver Island, B.C.
She leaves many dear friends from her choirs in and around Lowell and Billerica, but most especially, Cindy Bliss, who has been at Liz's side since her diagnosis in August.
WETHERBEE -- A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, February 9, at 2:00 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church on Route 28 in Harwichport.
